Digital Photography 2

Week 1

Today is about bringing everyone up to speed and make sure we’re all comfortable shooting in either manual, or aperture priority mode. We’ll go over back-button focusing, metering and focusing modes and any lingering questions on optimal menu settings. We’ll go over filters, lens types, extension tubes and other interesting gear.

Homework: Choose one or two of the recommended exercises and shoot it in manual mode.

Week 2

We will take a more creative approach to photography and leave the technical knowledge behind, after brief review of the homework, we will look at the work of some famous photographers throughout history. We’ll discuss composition and how to tell a story through a single image or a series.

Homework: Capture a narrative through a singular image or series of images.

Week 3

Field Trip

Weather permitting, we will visit the celery fields. Practice composition as well as the technical skills required for capturing an image. Goals will be given on the day, but be prepared to capture a landscape, an abstract, as well as tell a narrative through a series of images.

Homework: Select and edit the best photos from the trip.

We will review photos from our field trip, and do a brief overview of post processing. We will focus on the limits of post-production and how to incorporate it into how we shoot. We will quiz ourselves to ensure that the limits of our technical knowledge never inhibits our ability to express ourselves effectively.

Homework: Choose a photographer from the Great Photographers channel and watch the entire video.

Week 4

After a brief review of the homework, we will answer any lingering technical questions and then we can finally focus on the most utilized form of photography: portraiture. We will focus on all techniques related to portrait photography: lighting, posing, post-production, before wrapping up with a brief review.

Homework Assignment: Sign up for another class! :)
